Of Crochet and Chickens
Hey yall! I was sick most of this week so I've only really got semi interesting stuff for Friday and Saturday but Friday was pretty great! Let's get into it!
Monday was pretty chill! As it was labor day, all of my sites were canceled so I basically just vibed all day. Tuesday, I unfortunately woke up a bit sick so I had to cancel my sites for a few days. This is mostly due to me not wanting to get others sick but also to avoid a flare lol. The week thus turned into a few days of crochet, piano practice, and a lot of old disney movies. I also played an awesome game with my brother that's basically pandemic but lord of the rings so that was pretty sick! It was a pretty chill week but on Thursday, I was really wanting to do something and family haven was chill with me coming back since all I had was a little bit of a sniffle at that point. Thursday night, I got some good and bad news. Basically, for the bad news, I'm apparently kind of over hours which I did not think was a thing on service missions? Because of this, I'm dropping teaching with the sisters on Saturday nights which will be nice I guess to have more time to relax. In good news, I was given permission to wear my spanish teaching tag when I go out with the Hermanas!!! I know it's kind of dumb but I'm honestly so happy about it! I'm now either in progress for everything I wanted to achieve switching from my goal of teaching to service or have already achieved it so yay! Friday was pretty chill. Family haven was basically dead for the first half of the day then basically exploded for the rest of my time there. Pretty standard tbh. Teaching with the Hermanas was sooo much fun! The first place we went to, we met a lovely lady from Peru. She had chickens and we chased them probably longer than we should have. They kept trying to get into the garden though and if we didn't chase them away from it, she'd hit them with a stick so chasing them seemed like the best option. I was able to share my first scripture in Spanish too! It was by no means perfect but the Hermanas told me I did well so I'll take it! It was also so sweet as she asked us when our birthdays are and, after discovering mine is close, she insisted we take a mini cake she had at her house to celebrate. I guess me being a food magnet for the sisters continues as we got that cake, peaches, and many other tasty snacks that night. It was really funny near the end of that lesson as we were all chatting as we headed out and the second she turned her back, all the chickens basically teleported into the garden. This was quite a funny way to end the lesson as she sprinted away to grab her stick while yelling in Spanish at them which was very different from the previous second when she'd been very gentle and sweet. RIP the chickens. We then headed off to a sister who had offered us tacos. Once we got there, I was informed the options were chorizo, asado, and then tongue, intestine, head, and some other things that I didn't particularly want to see. I was a wimp and only tried the chorizo and asado but it was SOOOOO good!!! One funny thing that happened is that they had these sauces out and, due to the positioning and color, I assumed the center one was the medium sauce. After loading up my tacos with it, I learned it was the extra extra spicy one and everyone became very concerned for me for a sec but I ate them with like zero reaction cause I loveeee spicy food and earned the respect of that family I guess! I can guess that as, when I walked in, they kind of avoided me due to me being new and when I walked out, they all gave me big hugs and were chatting with me and giving me candies to try so I guess my spice tolerance is good for something! Hna Salvador and I convinced Hna Downs to try the spicy sauce and that went really poorly. Sorry about that Hermana! After that house, we ran to another appointment only to be told they had covid once we got there. It was fine though as hna downs were still slightly dying so it was probably for the best that we had a tiny break. We were also running a bit behind so it all works out! We then headed back to our lovely friend's home with the fancy aquarium at which we were given pineapple soda which was far better than the tamarind in my opinion. My brain unfortunately stopped spanishing about an hour into the discussion though when one of our friends went on a long rant about coffee tortillas from my understanding? After that, we took some quick pictures before all going to bed. A little context for the pictures: Hna Downs and I are close to 6'0 while Hna Salvador is about 5'0 and also kind of expects a bit of princess treatment. Due to this, we've developed the joke that we're Salvador's bodyguards and thus decided we had to take some photos cause duh! Twas pretty fun, especially since we were all so tired we were a tad delirious. Saturday was my temple shift which was pretty great but also very tiring. I was put mostly in initiatory and then the sealing office and, since elevators tend to make me nauseous, I was basically running up and down the stairs for a good portion of my shift. I then went out with the Sisters. We saw a black widow which was really cool. I've reached the point where I am somewhat fascinated by spiders but if they move at me I'll still kind of freak out. Improvement nonetheless! We unfortunately didn't have much luck knocking due to the BYU game and the appointments also canceled due to the game so we kind of just wandered. An older woman let us in for a minute though which was quite fun as we talked a bit about Seattle as I have some family there and it's where her husband was from. One really funny moment from the night though came as we knocked a door and were greeted by a very kind man who informed us we are welcome inside but that his elderly father was naked in the living room and thus he figured we probably wouldn't want to come in which was true. Happy it was him who opened the door and not his dad! I also tried to do the intro at a house we knocked and, despite doing it before, I kind of panicked and, in response to the question of what are y'all doing here, I basically just said wanna chat? Still a tad embarrassed but it was really funny as we learned right after they were marked as do not contact in the app. One of the sisters likes to not check before we knock for a bit more thrill I guess.
I'm excited for tonight as I'm going to a baptism with the Hermanas! I didn't teach the person at all but it will still be cool as I actually dont think ive been to a baptism since my own so I'm very excited!
Scripture of the Week:
2 Nephi 2:13;15
"And if ye shall say there is no law, ye shall also say there is no sin. if ye shall say there is no sin, ye shall also say there is no righteousness. and if there be no righteousness there be no happiness. and if there be no righteousness nor happiness there be no punishment nor misery. And if these things are not there is no God. and if there is no God we are not, neither the earth; for there could have been no creation of thing, neither to act nor to be acted upon; wherefore, all things must have vanished away....all things which are created, it must needs be that there was an opposition"
Love,
Sister Wynn
